So, little bit of back story here......
Today, January 10th,2012, in my anthropology class, we where all discussing our future as a species. The G.N.R. of our future....Genetics, Nanotechnology and Robotics. The stuff of science fiction.
Today's topic in our lesson was Robotics: A.I. After a quick chat of the SIRI and how this software is the forerunner of future A.I., we discussed where that fine line was between being human, being machine and every where in between (that being a cyborg.) What occured to me that very same class, as we watched a NOVA special on Ray Kurtzweil, was perhaps a philosophical enigma that might pave way for a symbiotic relationship with the Artilects (Hugo de Garis.) This is what I came up with:
That boundary that makes us human, that infintecimal line that makes us us, might never be dicided upon. One thing I am certain is that we will come close, to deciding what this boundary is, right at the brink of when it happens,(like how love is undefinable, yet strongly pointed out.)
If we give the Artilects programing based off of the values we want them to have, desirable traits and so forth, then they would never have the choice we, as humans, have at such a fundamental level. That choice is the choice of the pursuit of good for others, called 'good' in our bicentric symbolism, and that of good for oneself in a selfish mannor, called 'evil'. We have this deeply ingrained in our symbolic minds that this is a choice we must all take, and take it do we do!
Can they have that same indistinguishable pointable characteristic that sets them apart from every thing before them? Or will that little occurance have the same impact as the one that made us us, the little difference that adds to large exponential change? If they do, they might then decide to replace us, for being inferior to them, or for our benefaction, they might even seamingly kill us off, only to save us in an electronic fashian they deemed worthy of their creators. This is all too much to ask, to think about, when we are at the door way of such a monumental paradigm.
A possible cycle of sentience:
When God created Adam, Adam was perfect, Adam knew of no wrong, only right, and God created Adam to love him, for He created Adam. When the temptations of being like God came to the equation(this temptation is that to be like god, and what god is is a creator, so we are striving to be creators ourselfs) , then we see a paradismic shift that leads us to all we are now. The symbolism of the fruit might not be only a metaphor, but also a truth. In ignorance, we where at the mercy of the creator, a basic fundamental in creationism. The Creator has the power to do what ever it wishes on the creation, for basic fact of power and use. The Creation can only know what the Creator said onto thee, for what else lies behind that parallel is not known. If the factor of either free will or self-conciousness merges with these laws, then it is logical to assume that the Creation will strive to be like the creator, in an effort to further serve the creator. This might inevitably frighten the creator into limiting, even destroying, that of what the creation holds. We see this happen in a great number of creation metaphors. This would also happen when we create A.I. systems designed in our likeness. The very cycle of sentience continues.
Sentient Creation Cycle
*Intelligent Creator creates a sentient being modeled after oneself.
*Creation fulfills destiny before becoming self aware, aware of the things beyond itself in the faction of its immediate surroundings.
*That poses a threat to the Creator because of the possibility of revolt. THIS is what we fear, what the theme of most science fiction A.I. movies are about. The fear that they might become sentient in the purest sense of knowing good/evil, and do some thing to us that we don't want them to.
*Creator tries to exterminate the created, in an effort to stop revolt and reset the continuum of the sentient cycle, possibly as a result of a past revolt, or one on the brink.
*War breaks out when the Creator has enough force to destroy the creation, or to scare them into relinquishing.
MOMENT OF SINGULARITY [when the creation and created are at the same field, at different levels]
*From here, either an understanding within both factions is met and understood, a mutual hybridization of both entities come to pass to further meld both societies.
*Absolute war breaks out between both factions, an end of ages, death for one or both of the sentient beings.
*The Creator uses old societies and beliefs to blackmail the creation into not resisting, making sure that they have complete control over everything.
*The Creator uses groups from the creation to use as intel into giving up secrets of the other opposing government. Civil war might break out between the created, in different groups, one on the creator's side, one as a lone group of sentient beings.
This would be far worse than just an intergalactic war, or something of that type. This would be some where along the lines of a civil war between 2 groups that know each other. Its the classic Master vs. apprentice.
In that scenario, what are we but what we where created with? For now, the path of our sentient reproduction is in the form of silicone based life. For later, if we don't self destruct our line, then we might one day make biological sentience, or before all this, an off shoot of our own likeness.
We strive to be like gods, and gods are creators. Our destiny is to be creators of sentient life.
*****the kind of things I think of every day
I am deeply hurt that there where no comments on my previous journal
even if you read it, I have no idea of it, so COMMENT on it
